Policy Change Enables Oil Movement
- The United States has eased sanctions on Iranian crude oil that was held at sea during the conflict period. The decision enables buyers to obtain these particular supplies. Indian refineries have expressed their intent to acquire Iranian oil from the market.
- Shipping data from the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) shows a key update. An oil tanker that left Iran for China has now changed its course. The vessel is currently moving toward India. This change indicates that Iranian oil may reach India for the first time in about seven years.
Tankers Change Route Toward India
- A large tanker named Jaya started its journey from Iran toward Southeast Asia. The vessel initially planned to travel to China as its endpoint. The recent tracking data shows that the vessel has altered its course which now leads to India.
- Reports suggest that Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) may use this shipment. The company has not issued any official statement about the matter yet.
- The tanker Jordan shows India as its destination. This evidence indicates that multiple shipments will arrive at Indian ports in the near future.
Decline in Imports After Sanctions
India was once a major buyer of Iranian oil. Import levels were high before sanctions:
- The 2018 period saw an import volume of 518000 barrels per day.
- The May 2019 period saw an import volume of 268000 barrels per day.
U.S. sanctions prohibited these imports after this period. Indian refineries then shifted to other suppliers to meet demand.
Possible Return of Iranian Oil to India
- The recent easing of restrictions has created a new opportunity. Indian companies can now consider Iranian oil again. The current tanker movements show that supply routes between countries are becoming operational again.
- The upcoming delivery will establish the first Iranian oil shipment to India since 2019.
