Tech Leaders Debate WhatsApp Privacy Claims

Allegations from Elon Musk and Pavel Durov

  • Musk stated that users should not rely on WhatsApp for data security and privacy. He suggested that users move to X Chat for messaging, video calls, and communication. He claimed that this platform offers stronger protection for user data.
  • Durov also questioned WhatsApp’s privacy system. He shared details of a petition filed in a U.S. court. He claimed that despite end-to-end encryption Meta may still access user messages. He further alleged that company employees could read private chats. He stated that this practice misleads users. He added that Telegram does not follow such methods and focuses on user security.

Response from WhatsApp and Meta

WhatsApp and Meta rejected these claims on the X platform. They stated that the lawsuit mentioned in the claims has no valid basis.

WhatsApp explained its privacy system in simple terms:

  • Messages use end-to-end encryption
  • Only the sender and the receiver can read the messages
  • Encryption keys stay on user devices
  • No third party can access or decrypt the content

Meta and WhatsApp said that they designed this system to protect user privacy. They maintained that they cannot read user messages under this setup.
