Trump declares announcement of blockade implementation
According to U.S. President Donald Trump Iran violated its obligation to maintain open access through the Strait of Hormuz. He explained that the situation has created major challenges for countries which rely on the strait.
Trump declared that he has authorized U.S. Navy forces to start military operations in the area. The naval forces will establish a blockade which prevents ships from moving through the strait according to his announcement. He stated that U.S. ships will prevent all vessels from entering or leaving the designated area when necessary.
The U.S. military will halt any ship which operates in international waters and pays Iran according to his statement. He declared that these payments constitute illegal activities which would result in vessels being denied safe passage protection. Trump declared that the United States is ready to implement additional measures when necessary.
He further stated that:
- All mines which enter the strait will undergo removal or destruction
- The United States will respond forcefully to any assault against its military personnel
- The United States will utilize military force against any threats to commercial shipping.
Reasons Behind the Breakdown in Negotiations
The negotiations between Trump and Iran involved multiple topics according to his explanation. The two sides could not reach an agreement about Iran's nuclear program.
Iran maintained its nuclear program because it refused to halt its nuclear development according to him. The United States will not permit Iran to secure nuclear weapons under any circumstances according to him.
Trump presented evidence which demonstrated Iran's military capabilities. He stated that:
- Iranian naval forces and aerial forces have suffered from reduced operational capabilities
- The air defense systems together with the radar systems have been rendered inoperative
- Multiple high-ranking officials have been lost
He connected these events to Iran's ongoing efforts to develop nuclear weapons.
Planned International Involvement
Trump stated that the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz will begin soon. He added that other countries may join these efforts. He stressed that the goal is to prevent Iran from gaining any unlawful advantage from the situation.
