Negotiations Start Again to Decrease Tensions
The United States plans to conduct its second round of negotiations with Iran today in Pakistan. The negotiations work to decrease existing tensions throughout West Asia. An Iranian delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has already arrived in Islamabad for this purpose.
Pakistan Functions as a Neutral Mediator
Pakistan will act as a mediator for this upcoming round of talks. The country will not conduct any direct talks between Iran and the United States.
Explanation of Indirect Communication Method
Iranian officials have confirmed that communication will happen through Pakistani representatives. The intermediary will handle message delivery between the two parties. Araqchi’s team is expected to meet only Pakistani officials directly. They will then share Iran’s positions through this channel.
Iran vs. United States Statement
- Iran has clarified that no direct meeting is planned between Iranian and US representatives. The White House previously stated that both sides would establish direct contact with each other.
- Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson announced through social media platform X that the current structure maintains its indirect nature. US officials announced a different direct approach that would happen during the talks which led to this announcement.
Iran’s representation
Abbas Araqchi leads the Iranian delegation. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf will not participate in this round. Reports suggest internal disagreements may have influenced his absence.
US representation and possible additions
The United States is represented by special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. According to the White House, Vice President JD Vance may join later if progress is made during the talks.
Internal Dynamics Within Iran’s Leadership
The absence of senior political figures from Iran’s side has drawn attention. Ghalibaf’s reported withdrawal from the delegation suggests differences within Iran’s political structure regarding the negotiations.
US Expectations and Conditions for Progress
- Former US President Donald Trump has commented on the ongoing process. He stated that Iran is expected to present proposals aligned with US demands.
- Trump also said any potential agreement would depend on Iran accepting certain conditions. These include steps related to its nuclear program. He specifically called for Iran to give up its stockpile of enriched uranium. He also raised the issue of ensuring free shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
