Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah Likely To Resign Amid Leadership Discussions

Political developments in Karnataka have suddenly gotten more heated after reports came in that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah might actually step down from the post,or something like that, soon. Party sources say Siddaramaiah is expected to have a breakfast get together with cabinet colleagues on Thursday morning, before heading to Raj Bhavan in Bengaluru, to hand over his resignation to the Governor.

This wave of activity follows multiple rounds of meetings in Delhi. Senior Congress leaders met Karnataka representatives there, again and again. The talk,as reported, centered on who should take the reins next for the state government, plus what kind of minor political reshuffling might make sense inside the party ranks.

Congress Leadership Holds Key Discussions

  • Earlier this week, senior Congress leaders — AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, K.C. Venugopal, and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Surjewala — reportedly met with Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah, and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar too.
  • As per reports, the Congress high command asked Siddaramaiah to be flexible and cooperate with a leadership shift in Karnataka. Under that idea, the party is said to have suggested offering him a Rajya Sabha seat, along with a later assignment as Leader of the Opposition in the Upper House.
  • Sources also mention that Siddaramaiah’s son, Yatindra, could be looked at for the Deputy Chief Minister position if the transition actually happens.

Siddaramaiah Yet to Announce Final Decision

Even so, reports suggest Siddaramaiah did not simply agree right away. Instead, he reportedly told party leadership that he would want to speak with his supporters first, before arriving at a final call or whatever.

The Congress leadership is also mulling the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections while going through this whole political transition thing. Since Mallikarjun Kharge’s Rajya Sabha term is about to end, the party may put forward Siddaramaiah for that seat.

All of this of course has made people talk more than usual about big shifts in Karnataka politics over the next few weeks.

AHINDA Formula Creeps Into The Leadership Debate

  • During talks with the party leadership, Siddaramaiah is said to have stressed that the next Karnataka CM ought to come from the AHINDA communities. In simple terms, the AHINDA grouping covers minorities, backward classes, and Dalits, and together they form a major backing bloc for the Congress in Karnataka.
  • Sources say Siddaramaiah told top leaders that he has the support of something like 100 MLAs and that this support would stay put if the leadership chooses an AHINDA representative.
  • If Congress leadership actually buys into this idea, State Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara could become a serious contender for the Chief Minister’s post.

DK Shivakumar Keeps Mentioning The Power-Sharing Line

At the same time, DK Shivakumar reportedly reminded the Congress leadership about the power-sharing arrangement that was discussed during the 2023 Assembly elections.

As per reports, Shivakumar argued that he should get a chance to become Karnataka CM after two and a half years, like the earlier internal understandings within the party already suggested.

That point has added yet another layer to the ongoing leadership wrangling inside the Karnataka Congress.

Congress Leaders Publicly Shut Down Change Talk

Even with all the chatter, Congress leaders have publicly denied that any leadership change is happening right away.

Speaking to the media after those Delhi meetings, K.C. Venugopal sort of said that the whole talk was just tied up with Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council elections, and nothing beyond that, you know. He also pushed back on talk that the Chief Minister’s post might change, calling it rumors.

Siddaramaiah then also spoke to reporters, and he said that during the meetings nothing like a cabinet reshuffle or leadership switch was even discussed, full stop.

Still, even with these denials, political observers feel that internal negotiations inside the Congress are not actually over, they’re still running, quietly.

What the Current Situation means for Karnataka politics

The reported discussions, in a way, point to a larger political balancing act within the Karnataka Congress. Now the leadership has to juggle regional interests, caste arithmetic, and the promises that were made to senior figures earlier.

Whether Siddaramaiah stays as Karnataka CM, or there’s a transition that happens, the end result can steer the party’s political moves in the run-up to the next national and state elections.

For now, Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar both remain key figures in this unfolding political moment.
