Google just introduced a more serious AI security tool for Android

It’s called Fake Call Detection and it’s meant to help block those AI generated voice scams that keep getting better and better. At least that’s the idea , Google says this update should protect people from deepfake impersonation attempts, you know the kind where someone tries to sound like a real person they’re not.

And yeah, cybercriminals are leaning hard into AI these days. • More specifically, when two Android users both have Phone by Google , their phones can trade a secure verification signal quietly, in the background. If someone tries to fake a trusted contact’s phone number, the expected verification signal won’t arrive.
• When that happens, Android flags the call as suspicious right away, and it shows a warning message to let the recipient know the caller might not be who they say they are.

Real Time Protection Against Deepfake Fraud

Google says the feature works kind of like a digital handshake between devices, so it can help users spot fake calls that look like theyre from saved contacts, but are really cooked up by scammers using AI voice cloning.

If Android can’t verify the call, users might see an alert that points to a possible impersonation attempt, and then they can hang up right away, before they end up sharing personal details, or anything like that.

Who Gets the New Feature?

Fake Call Detection is being rolled out worldwide for Android phones on Android 12 and newer. It starts with Google Pixel devices, and then it expands step by step to more Android models that also support the Phone by Google app.

Still, the verification system only works well when both sides are in Googles communications setup, meaning the caller and receiver should be using Phone by Google and its related services.

This launch is tied to Googles wider 2026 Android security effort aimed at reducing online scams, identity theft, phishing attempts, and AI powered fraud.

Recently Google also rolled out things like Verified Financial Calls plus other security additions built around AI, meant to help people recognize shady messages before they get hit.
