WhatsApp Tests “Scam Alert” Feature For Unknown Numbers
WhatsApp seems to be working on this new privacy thing called “Scam Alert” or maybe it’s just “ScamAlert”, anyway it’s aimed at making Android users safer. Right now the feature is still in testing, so it isn’t live for everyone yet, kind of.
WABetaInfo first mentioned the update. That’s the site that tracks WhatsApp changes and leaks and all that. According to their info the tool will mainly warn people when they interact with messages from unknown contacts, like numbers you don’t have saved.
Warning message for unknown chats
So if you open a chat from an unknown number WhatsApp will show a warning. The wording will basically say the conversation “might be a scam” and yeah it pops up as soon as you open the thread, like immediately. The idea is to get you to pause before you reply, rather than just typing whatever.
How it works
WhatsApp won’t actually read what you write. And it also won’t send the message contents to Meta’s servers. End-to-end encryption stays on, so none of that gets weakened.
The detection is said to use artificial intelligence to spot potential scam patterns. And the analysis is done in a way that doesn’t mess with message privacy, so you know, it’s not scanning everything openly.
User choice remains important
This part matters, because it doesn’t make you do anything. It only gives guidance. After the warning shows up, you’ll be offered two options, kind of clean and simple:
- Block the number
- Trust the chat
Whatever you choose is still your call. It doesn’t override you, or force a decision.
Purpose of the Scam Alert tool
The point is pretty straightforward, reduce risk from strangers. A lot of scams start with messages from numbers you never saved in your phone contacts, so you wouldn’t recognize them right away.
In that sense this adds a extra layer of caution and helps you spot suspicious messages earlier.
Other WhatsApp safety tools
- WhatsApp already has other privacy options. For example there is “Silence Unknown Callers.” There are also settings that let users block messages coming from unknown accounts.
- So Scam Alert is basically building on what’s already there, but it’s adding another safety step while you’re in the chat.
Availability status
- The feature is still under development. It is being tested on Android devices first.
- A wider release is expected later. WhatsApp has not announced an exact launch date.
