PM Modi says he is saddened by Bharathiraja’s passing  

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi voiced grief over the demise of acclaimed filmmaker Bharathiraja, who reportedly passed away on June 10 after dealing with some health related issues. He called it a major jolt for the Indian film industry , and he also sent condolences to Bharathiraja’s family as well as to all his admirers, which is understandable really.
• In a post on X, Modi said Bharathiraja had a key part in molding modern Tamil cinema. He praised the director’s long lasting contribution to the craft and mentioned how Bharathiraja’s screen presence captured rural life in a very distinctive way, quite naturally. The Prime Minister noted that the work of Bharathiraja will stay in the memory of movie lovers across many generations, even later on.

Bharathiraja’s long reach, especially in Tamil cinema  

Bharathiraja was seen as a respected storyteller, and also for how he could bring rural culture and human emotions to the screen without overdoing it.
