Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong already holds the title of world’s highest-paid prime minister, but he is set to receive another substantial boost in salary. Singapore has announced a revision to political salaries which would raise Wong’s benchmark, annual pay from S$2.2 million to S$3.6 million, equivalent to about Rs 27 crore a year.

The proposed revision would represent an increase of more than 60 percent in the benchmark salary, and is expected to further widen the gulf in salaries between Singapore’s political leadership and those of leaders in many other countries. The revised pay structure is set to come into force from October 15, 2026.

Lawrence Wong’s Salary to Reach Rs 27 Crore

According to the revised salary framework, Lawrence Wong’s annual benchmark salary would rise from S$2.2 million (around Rs 16.5 crore) to S$3.6 million (about Rs 27 crore).

The increase will also apply to other senior political leaders in Singapore. The benchmark salary for the country’s Deputy Prime Minister will rise from S$1.87 million to S$3.06 million. Cabinet ministers will have benchmark salaries ranging from approximately S$1.80 million to S$2.88 million, depending on their seniority and responsibilities.

Other Singapore Ministers Will Also Get Pay Hikes

The salary revision will not be limited to the Prime Minister.

Singapore’s junior ministers and other political office holders will also receive increases. However, the adjustments will be introduced in stages, the initial one-time increase of up to 9 percent will come into force from October 15, based on individual circumstances, and performance and responsibilities.

Further salary adjustments will be linked to individual performance and responsibilities associated with each position.

Singapore’s Political Salary System

Singapore has had a distinctive approach to political salaries for many years, one of the ways it does this is by using the earnings of top private-sector professionals as one of the benchmarks for determining ministerial compensation.

The government has defended this approach as a means of helping Singapore compete for highly capable people who might otherwise opt for lucrative careers outside politics.

Political salaries were last significantly revised in 2012, when they were cut following public concerns over the high levels of compensation. A review recommended changes, but the government has not yet acted on it.
