Iran Missile Strike On Jordan Air Base Damages US Military Aircraft: A-10 Loses Wing, F-15 Jets Hit
  • A recent Iranian ballistic missile attack on the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan resulted in the damage to several American aircraft. The attack occurred as tensions between the U.S.A. and Iran continue to rise.
  • According to The Hill , which cited CBS News as its source, an A-10 attack plane, also called Warthog, was damaged beyond repair after losing one of its wings in the attack.
  • Additionally, eight F-15 fighter jets were damaged in the attack, though they were able to return to service after repairs.

Iran Missile Attack Targets U.S. Base in Jordan

The attack reportedly occurred as tension between Iran and the U.S.A. escalated once again. Iran sent ballistic missiles to Jordan, where American military personnel and equipment are stationed, after the U.S. launched strikes on Iran.

Jordan’s defense systems were able to shoot down a number of the ballistic missiles. Nevertheless, the attack showed that the U.S. military installations in the region remained vulnerable despite having formidable air defense systems.

The Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan’s eastern region is a strategically located military base, which houses American aircraft conducting operations in the region.

Nevertheless, the attack highlighted the risk to American aircraft and military installations in the region.

A-10 Warthog Suffers Heavy Damage

  • One of the aircraft damaged in the attack was a U.S. Air Force A-10C Thunderbolt II attack aircraft, known as Warthog.
  • Warthog is a ground-attack aircraft designed to provide close air support to ground forces. The aircraft is known to withstand battle damage due to its reinforced flight controls and landing gear, as well as its redundant systems.
  • As such, the fact that the attack caused the aircraft to lose one of its wings is a sign of significant damage.
  • The damage to the A-10 Warthog, as well as the F-15 fighter jets, raises questions about the efficacy of attacks on military bases and aircraft in the region and the ability to quickly recover damaged aircraft to return them to service.

F-15 Fighter Jets Also Were Damaged

Apart from the A-10 Warthog, several other aircraft were damaged in the attack. According to reports, eight of the damaged aircraft are F-15 fighter jets.

While the attack caused significant damage to the aircraft, it appears to be largely unfounded as, according to reports, none of the eight damaged F-15 aircraft were lost.

The attack may still result in changes to the way fighter jets are deployed in the region, as well as changes to their defenses.

Middle East Conflict Enters a More Dangerous Phase

  • The missile attack on the Jordanian air base occurs as the conflict between Iran and the U.S.A. enters an even more dangerous phase. The fighting between the two countries is no longer limited to direct confrontations between the two countries.
  • Rather, military installations and infrastructure in the Middle East, including those belonging to allied nations, such as Jordan, have become potential targets.
  • Jordan is a strategically important ally for the U.S.A. in the Middle East, and as such, it is of particular strategic interest to Iran.
  • As the fighting between Iran and the U.S.A. escalates, so does the risk to America’s military installations and aircraft in the region.
