Instagram Introduces New Feature Inspired By Snapchat

Instagram has launched this new thing called Instagram Instants. I mean it’s supposed to be about quick photo sharing, and also real-time messages, not that slow stuff. Meta is calling it a simpler way for people to send live photos to friends, and right away a lot of users started saying it feels kinda like Snapchat, because of the fast, almost temporary way things can be shared.

Meta also says it plans to make a separate app for Instants later. The company put out a demo video on its official blog, so yeah everyone could see it before launch.

How the Instagram Instants Feature Works

With Instants, the Live option shows up in the bottom-right area of the Instagram Inbox. Then you can open the camera and send a photo with one tap, real quick.

The steps are pretty simple, like:

  • Open the Instagram Inbox
  • Tap the Instants camera button
  • Capture a live photo
  • Send it straight to friends

You can also add a caption before you send. But, there aren’t any editing tools inside, so photos stay more natural and not really “tweaked” or filtered.

Temporary Photos Stay Visible for 24 Hours

Photos shared through Instants show up in the chat list for 24 hours. After that, they’re no longer there. Friends can open the image and reply right in the same conversation.

Instagram even includes an Undo option. So if someone sends a photo by accident, they can pull it back before the other person sees it.

Basically it’s close to Snapchat in that temporary content goes away after a limited amount of time.

Instagram Adds Security and Privacy Controls

Meta also built in multiple privacy protections for this new feature.

The platform blocks things like:

  • Screenshots
  • Screen recordings

That limitation is meant to help protect private chats and personal content, even when people try to save stuff.

Also, you sign in using your current Instagram account, so nothing extra needed. Teen safety controls are included too. If a teenager downloads the app for the first time, parents get an alert.

Limited Release for Now

Right now, Instagram Instants is only showing up in select countries. Meta is, well expected to expand it little by little, and bring it to more people soon.

This launch really signals that Instagram keeps trying to stay in the race with Snapchat, by rolling out things that are geared toward fast , low pressure sharing.

Why This New Feature Matters

The whole temporary content wave has shifted how people use social platforms. A lot of users tend to lean toward quick , almost spontaneous messages instead of carefully polished posts.

With Instagram Instants, Meta seems to want photo sharing to feel quicker and also more personal. The feature basically mixes Instagram’s huge audience reach with concepts that got popular on Snapchat.

And as the competition among social apps keeps growing, people can probably expect more features made for more private , real time conversations.
