KKR Vs MI: Kolkata Keep IPL 2026 Playoff Hopes Alive
Kolkata Knight Riders sort of stayed alive in the IPL 2026 playoff race, with a pretty hard-fought win over Mumbai Indians. It was one of those low scoring games where KKR got it done, beating MI by 4 wickets at this really crucial time in the tournament. After that, Kolkata moved up to 13 points and honestly kept the whole playoff picture feeling tight for the other sides who are still trying to squeeze in.
Mumbai Indians took their ninth defeat of the season, no sugar coating there. While Mumbai struggled, Kolkata just kept rolling late in the season, they’ve got six wins in their last seven matches and it shows.
KKR Strengthen Their Position in IPL 2026
That result improved KKR’s chances quite a bit, heading into the final league matches. Right now, Kolkata basically need one more helpful outcome to qualify for the next stage, and it’s not fully in their hands.
Next up, KKR face Delhi Capitals in their last league game, Sunday night. Earlier on the same day, Rajasthan Royals will take on Mumbai Indians. Kolkata can only stay in contention if Rajasthan end up losing that match, or at least if the result goes their way.
What this win over Mumbai also proved is that KKR have balance. Their bowling kept things in check early, and then the middle order absorbed the pressure during the chase, which is usually where games turn.
Mumbai Indians Struggle With the Bat
When Mumbai were asked to bat first, they never really found any rhythm. Kolkata’s bowlers kept things tight, line and length were controlled, and wickets kept coming at regular intervals.
Early Wickets Hurt Mumbai
Cameron Green gave KKR a strong start, he dismissed Rickelton for 6 and Naman Dhir for 0 in the same over. After that Saurabh Dubey piled on. He removed Rohit Sharma for 15, then bowled Suryakumar Yadav for 15 as well, and suddenly Mumbai’s chances looked a lot slimmer.
Tilak Varma a nd Hardik Pandya tried to patch things up in the innings. Still, runs were stubbornly hard to get on that kind of pitch, which really helped the bowlers. Between the seventh and eleventh overs, Mumbai only scraped together 22 runs, and there were no boundaries at all, not once.
Tilak made 20 off 32 balls, before Kartik Tyagi sent him back. Hardik, on the other hand, scored 26 from 27 deliveries, but he just couldn’t really step on the gas.
Bosch Provides Late Resistance
Corbin Bosch gave Mumbai that late little spark. After 18 overs, MI were 115/7, and for a moment it felt like a very low total was basically locked in.
But Bosch attacked during the final phase, and the scoreline changed pretty quickly. He stayed unbeaten on 32 from 18 balls. In the last over, he smashed two sixes and then a four off Kartik Tyagi, which turned the tide a lot.
Deepak Chahar also chipped in with 10 runs, including two boundaries. By the end, Mumbai finished on 147/8 in 20 overs.
There was rain during the innings, which delayed play for nearly an hour, but after the restart, Kolkata still seemed to carry the same momentum.
Manish Pandey and Powell Guide the Chase
KKR’s chase started under pressure as well. Finn Allen fell for 8 in the first over to Deepak Chahar.
KKR Recover After Early Setbacks
Ajinkya Rahane and Manish Pandey then rebuilt things, slowly and smartly. Rahane scored 21 off 17 balls, and he found a few key boundaries against Jasprit Bumrah.
Yet, Corbin Bosch didn’t let Mumbai give up control. He removed Rahane and Cameron Green in quick succession. That left Kolkata at 54/3.
From there, Mumbai still had the opening to steady the contest again.
Calm Partnership Changes the Match
Manish Pandey and Rovman Powell handled the situation with a kind of composure, not rushing anything. They kept rotating strike, and they punished anything loose that came their way.
Pandey scored 45 from 33 balls, striking six fours. Powell made 40 from 30 balls, and he cleared the ropes twice with two sixes.
Their partnership kind of carried KKR past the 100 mark and pushed the team so close, to victory it felt inevitable . Pandey attacked Hardik Pandya with back to back boundaries, while Powell kept the scoreboard ticking along from the other end
Mumbai did create some tension after dismissing both batters back to back. Kolkata slid to 124/5 , and then later it was 140/6
Rinku Singh stayed calm at the finish , he was still unbeaten on 9 and he finished the chase with Anukul Roy. KKR got to 148/6 in 18.5 overs
Bowlers lead Kolkata’s victory
Honestly, Kolkata’s bowling attack played the biggest role in how it turned out
Cameron Green took 2 wickets for 23 runs , and he removed two batters in one over. Saurabh Dubey also claimed 2 wickets and disrupted Mumbai’s top order
Kartik Tyagi picked up 2 wickets even though he conceded a bit late on. Sunil Narine delivered one of the most economical spells, wrapping things up with figures of 1/13 and 16 dot balls
For long stretches the bowlers stopped Mumbai from forming any solid partnerships
KKR playoff chances after the win
This latest KKR vs MI result has made the IPL 2026 playoff race a lot tighter. Kolkata now have momentum at just the right time in the season
To get through, KKR first have to beat Delhi Capitals in their final match . They’ll also need Rajasthan Royals to lose to Mumbai Indians earlier that day
With six wins in seven matches, Kolkata have basically given themselves a real shot , after stumbling earlier in the tournament
