India Continues Economic Growth Amid West Asia Tensions, Says Nirmala Sitharaman
Sitharaman, the Union Finance Minister, said India is still on a steady growth path, even with all the ongoing tensions in West Asia. She said this during a talk at the Viksit Bharat Sankalp meeting in Bengaluru Karnataka, and well, it sounded like she wanted to clear the air on a few things.
In her address, Nirmala Sitharaman also reacted to the criticism coming from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi about the economy. She pointed out that his Lok Sabha speeches, are mostly about pushing back, and not really about recognizing what’s happening on the ground, or the government’s welfare measures and such.
The Government Rejects Economic Crisis Claims
Sitharaman said the idea that the country is headed toward an immediate economic crisis doesn’t line up with the present economic picture. She highlighted India’s ongoing economic momentum, and added that the GDP numbers and views shared by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) back up this position.
She also suggested that certain stories like a kind of repeating narrative can make it seem as if the nation is struggling, even when the economic performance is actually holding up reasonably well.
Steps Taken While West Asia Uncertainty Persists
The minister further said the government has taken steps to keep fuel supply steady, despite uncertainties linked to what’s going on in West Asia. She stressed that, despite external pressures, the country is continuing to move forward economically.
Welfare and Development Achievements
Sitharaman then highlighted a set of welfare and development outcomes connected to the BJP-led government during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure. She claimed that around 25 crore people have come out of poverty, and that 12 crore toilets have been built under rural sanitation efforts.
In her view, these steps have helped improve daily living conditions, and also increased access to basic services for more people.
Expansion of Financial Inclusion and Digital Infrastructure
The Finance Minister mentioned the growth of financial inclusion and digital infrastructure across the country. She said that India now has 58 crore Jan Dhan accounts, 144 crore Aadhaar registrations , and 125 crore mobile connections.
She also pointed out that the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has become a widely recognized model for digital payments and has expanded access to digital financial services, like making it easier for people to transact day to day.
Focus on Growth and Welfare
Sitharaman said that these developments mirror the government’s endeavors to reinforce welfare programs, improve financial access and help economic growth. She explained that the country continues chasing development goals while, at the same time, handling domestic as well as international pressures.
