UPI Creates History In India: Record 25.5 Billion Transactions In October, Daily Payments Cross ₹1 Lakh Crore
India’s digital payments ecosystem has hit a new milestone with its Unified Payments Interface (UPI) hitting new heights, with 25.5 billion transactions in October 2026, valued at around ₹31.5 lakh crore.
Transactions grew from 24.1 billion in September, valued at ₹29.4 lakh crore.
UPI Transactions Exceed 25 Billion Mark
October 2026 will go down in history as the month that UPI hit 25.5 billion transactions for the first time.
Volume grew by 5.8% from September, with value up by 7.4%, hitting around ₹31.5 lakh crore.
This shows how important UPI has become across the country for both small and large payers.
Daily Average Transactions Hit New High
- The average daily value of UPI payments hit a new high for the first time in October.
- The average transaction value rose to ₹1,01,707 crore from ₹97,913 crore, an increase of 3.9%.
- Average transaction volumes rose to 822 million from 802 million.
- This shows how UPI is continuing to grow across different sectors in India.
Festival Season Drives Growth
UPI saw huge growth in October due to the festival season. With people buying more for Navratri, Dussehra and big sales on E-commerce sites.
People were using UPI to buy more smartphones, electronics, clothes, household items.
E-commerce sites and retailers benefitted from the rise in people wanting to pay with cashless solutions. People were also using QR payments to pay at local shops, restaurants, supermarkets and shopping centres.
The ease of making instant bank to bank payments has made it one of the most popular payment methods in India.
New UPI Record Amid MDR Debate
- The new record for UPI transactions comes as there has been debate over implementing Merchant Discount Rates (MDR).
- MDR is the cost involved in processing digital payments from customers to merchants. This has led to discussions between banks, payment providers, fintech firms and merchants.
- The MDR plan has been delayed until after Diwali.
- Despite the confusion around any costs associated with payment processing, the record in October shows that there has not been an immediate impact on UPI.
UPI Helps Build Digital Economy in India
UPI has changed the way we send and pay for money in India. More and more people are using digital payments whether they be street vendors, small businesses, large retailers or E-commerce.
The ability to instantly send money with an app and not having to carry cash has helped make UPI very popular. It has also been integrated with banking, QR codes and payment apps helping build digital financial inclusion.
This increased usage is supporting India’s Digital India plan.
What Does This Mean for the Future of Digital Payments in India?
- Hitting 25 billion transactions per month is a huge milestone for India’s fintech and banking industry.
- With increasing smartphone usage, internet access, digital banking and merchant acceptance, UPI is set to continue to play a key role in India’s cashless economy.
- The performance in October 2026 shows how important digital payments have become during big shopping periods.
- As more people and businesses use instant payments, UPI is helping to put India amongst the best digital payments ecosystems in the world.
