India-US Trade Talks Reach Plateau, Says Nirmala Sitharaman
India And The US Enter Into The 'Plateau' In Bilateral Trade Negotiations Essay
India and the United States seem to have reached a 'plateau' in their bilateral trade negotiations, the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated, suggesting that there may be very limited scope for concessions on either side.
Speaking at the Munich Leaders' Meeting in New Delhi, Monday, Sitharaman said that the ongoing talks towards a proposed India-US trade deal are continuing. Yet, she warned that both sides may have entered the 'plateau' in bilateral trade negotiations, after multiple rounds of intensive talks.
According to Sitharaman, it may be hard to proceed from here as both sides would need to identify more areas for negotiations. However, the finance minister said that, if there are additional areas of negotiation that can be identified, both India and the US can explore them and find a way forward.
US Seeks To Reduce Trade Imbalance
In particular, the trade imbalance between the two countries remains to be a pressing issue. Sitharaman pointed that the balance at present seems to be favoring India, while the US seeks to reduce its trade deficit with the country.
The two countries have been negotiating a trade agreement since February 2025, to boost market access, strengthen economic ties and address longstanding trade-related concerns.
Tariffs Becoming A Major Concern
In addition, Sitharaman spoke about the problem of imposing tariffs as a method to address trade imbalances. She argued that although a part of a trade negotiation framework, tariffs have increasingly been used as a 'pressure' tool.
India has argued that trade differences with the US have to be addressed through dialogue, negotiations and mutual market access, instead of only tariffs.
India-US Trade Deal Still Under Negotiation
The proposal of the India-US trade agreement covers several areas, including tariff reductions, market access, non-tariff barriers, digital trade and supply-chain cooperation.
While both parties are keen on bolstering economic ties with the US, differences over market access to some of India's key sectors and trade imbalance had complicated negotiations. As per the recent comments made by Sitharaman, it might take more negotiations to arrive at the final deal unless the two sides identify additional areas of concessions.
India Focuses On Protecting Sensitive Sectors
Sitharaman's comments about India-US negotiations into a 'plateau' were made against the backdrop of discussions of trade agreements with other major economies. She mentioned the ongoing talks on an India-European Union trade agreement, noting that India has been negotiating market access terms while safeguarding key sectors like agriculture and dairy.
In the coming days, businesses, exporters, investors and policymakers will be watching out for developments in India-US negotiations to see if the two sides can bridge the remaining differences.
