Hyderabad Metro Phase-2: Extension To Medchal And Shamirpet

On New Year's Day, the government brought some exciting news for the residents of North Hyderabad. The government has plans to extend metro rail connectivity to Medchal and Shamirpet as part of Hyderabad Metro's second phase. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has asked the metro officials to prepare detailed project reports (DPRs) for these new routes within three months. These reports will be included in Phase-2 'B' of the metro rail project and submitted to the central government for approval.

Metro Rail Phase-2 Overview

The state government has structured the metro expansion in two parts:

  • Part A: Five routes were finalized last year, with DPRs sent to the central government for approval.
  • Part B: Expands the metro till Shamshabad Airport and then to Forth City for which DPR work is currently under way. The government has included Medchal and Shamirpet corridors in this phase as well.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had a meeting with Municipal Administration Principal Secretary Dana Kishore and Hyderabad Airport Metro Rail Limited (HAML) MD NVS Reddy for fast-tracking DPR preparation for both these critical corridors.

Proposed Routes

  • Metro: Paradise to Medchal: The 23 km stretch passes by Tadbund, Boyinpally, Suchitra Circle, Kompally, Gundlapochampally, Kandlakoya, and ORR Exit.
  • JBS Metro Station to Shamirpet: The 22-km stretch from Vikrampuri, Karkhana, Tirumalagiri, Lotkunta, Alwal, Bollaram, Hakimpeta, Thoonkunta, and ORR Exit.

The CM highlighted his familiarity with the region, citing his experience as an MP from the region and pointed out the traffic problems the residents face. Expansion plans were also discussed with Malkajgiri MP Etala Rajender, ensuring that local needs and recommendations are met.

Central-State Collaboration

The state government is aiming to finalize the DPRs for the two corridors in three months. Similar to Phase-2 'A', the extension projects of Phase-2 'B' will be undertaken jointly under the State and Central Governments. The DPRs will be sent to the Center once these are approved by the State Cabinet.

Public Reaction and Future Scenario

The residents of North Hyderabad, through the Sadhana Samiti, have been fighting for improved metro connectivity. This announcement has received a warm welcome, which indicates hopes for better transportation and less traffic congestion in the region.
