Metro Rail: Double-Decker Model For Visakhapatnam And Vijayawada

A one-of-a-kind double-decker design is incorporated into the metro rail projects covering 23.70 km in all, of which 19 km would be completed in Visakhapatnam along the stretch between Madhurawada and Tatichetlapalem and the other between Gajuwaka and the Steel Plant. In Vijayawada, it would reach 4.70 km in length from the Ramavarappadu Ring to Nidamanur. The innovative design seeks to optimize the use of urban space while tackling traffic issues. The Chief Minister, Chandrababu Naidu, recently approved the plans in a project review meeting.

Project Overview and Approvals

Amaravati Metro Rail Corporation Managing Director Ramakrishna Reddy submitted a detailed proposal, which includes plans in compliance with the 2017 Metro Rail Policy. The state government is asking for 100% funding from the central government for the 142.90 km metro rail projects planned across Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada. The Chief Minister emphasized consultations with central authorities to secure financial support. He also directed officials to ensure metro services are operational within four years.

The project aligns with provisions in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, and the state government has already submitted the Detailed Project Report (DPR) to the Centre. Ministers Narayana, BC Janardhan Reddy, and other officials actively participated in the planning discussions.

Understanding the Double-Decker Model

The double-decker metro system introduces a three-level infrastructure:

  • Ground Level: The existing road network remains intact.
  • Flyover Level: A new overpass is built 10 meters above the road to ease up traffic congestion
  • Metro Track Level: The metro rail runs on an additional 8 meters from the flyover, and this makes it total 18 meters in some sections.

This model was taken up to address the traffic problems, especially on the national highway between Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam. The design is such that it integrates the road, flyover, and metro rail systems seamlessly, thus providing efficient urban transit solutions.

Comparative Analysis and Future Plans

The officials stated that the Centre had sanctioned ₹8,565 crore for a 16 km metro rail project in Kolkata and sought similar financial support for Andhra Pradesh's initiatives. The Chief Minister reiterated that the metro rail project should be supported under the 2017 Metro Policy and other legal provisions.

The state government plans to implement these advanced systems efficiently, enhancing connectivity and reducing urban traffic challenges.
