Chennai Super Kings Exit IPL 2025 Playoff Race After Narrow Loss to Punjab Kings
Chennai Super Kings' 2025 Indian Premier League campaign eventually came to an end with an official defeat in a nail-biting game against Punjab Kings, a second straight season of no playoff. In a hard-fought match on Wednesday, CSK could not defend a gritty total of 190 and went down by four wickets off two remaining balls. Captain MS Dhoni, reflecting on the outcome, emphasized the importance of converting starts and capitalizing on key moments that went unutilized.
CSK's First-Inning Collapse Proves Costly
Batting first, Chennai Super Kings seemed to be at ease and cruising to a total of more than 200. The innings gained momentum with a 78-run association between Dewald Brevis and Sam Curran. Curran smashed an attacking 88 of 47 deliveries in the process, hitting nine boundaries and scoring four over the ropes. The innings collapsed in the latter overs though as Yuzvendra Chahal led the way with a masterful display of leg-spin.
CSK's lower and middle order folded, losing four wickets in a row. Chahal's turning point was his last over when he bowled out MS Dhoni, Deepak Hooda, Anshul Kambob, and Noor Ahmed—registering a heroic hat-trick, his second in IPL history. Chennai was bowled out for 190 in 19.2 overs, squandering four valuable deliveries that could have brought precious runs.
Punjab's Chase Led by Composed Partnerships
In reply, Punjab Kings slowed down the chase. The initial overs were in the channels, but the turn-around was provided by the middle-order combination of Brevis and Curran. Brevis manned the fort and Curran kept his wizard act going, guiding Punjab to even par for the asking rate. The combination set it up for Punjab to win the game with six wickets in hand and two balls remaining.
Punjab, under pressure spells during death overs, held its nerves. CSK fielding errors—dropped chances among them—again swayed the balance in favor of Kings XI. The missed chances later belonged to Dhoni, assigning the same reasons to the reason that the team could have played 15 more runs and was forced to play half-chances on the ground.
Dhoni Points Out Execution Lapses After The Match
In reply to the post-match ceremony, MS Dhoni acknowledged that although the team managed to put up a fightable score, their inability to utilize their batting capability to the fullest and lost opportunities in fielding led them to lose the match. "It is the first time this season that we have got a score like this. But we could have done better with the last overs. We did not play the remaining balls in the right way and lost wickets in haste," Dhoni said.
He particularly attributed the major contributors of the opposition. "Sam Curran played with good intent and purpose. Brevis batted well in the middle. But we allowed things to happen after the 16th over. The four balls that we failed to use and the dropped catches made a huge difference," he continued to emphasize, highlighting the narrow margins in close T20 matches.
CSK's Playoff Miss a Growing Concern
Chennai Super Kings' fall out of the IPL 2025 playoff contention is the second consecutive year past champions have not qualified for the knockouts. The team, previously renowned for consistency in earlier seasons, now faces fresh criticism for its team strength, middle-order weakness, and bowling depth in pressure games.
Ever since their premature campaign shutdown, CSK would most likely now set its sights towards re-building and planning strategies ahead of the next auction cycle. The franchisee, which historically has favored making investments in veteran players, would most likely seek to incorporate youth assets and make improvements to their death-over tactics in an effort to be able to survive for years to come.
