Chinnaswamy Stampede
There was a stampede when there was celebration in Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium. Eleven individuals died. More than 50 others were injured. The incidence drew the nation's attention.
Sunil Gavaskar Shares His Thoughts
Sunil Gavaskar, the former Indian cricket captain, reacted to the incident. In a column in an English newspaper, he mourned. He claimed that such a huge emotional response occurred because RCB supporters had been waiting for so long for a title.
Earlier Victory Could Have Tamed Emotion
Gavaskar said that if RCB had won an earlier title, the fans would have behaved differently. He said teams which won titles at the beginning of IPL days did not experience such a frenzied celebration. He stressed that RCB supporters carried the slogan "Ee Sala Cup Namde" for years. This year, however, the slogan was rarely heard.
RCB's Performance Praised
As told by Gavaskar, RCB's performance this year was superb. The team emerged victorious in all its matches at away grounds. This was a new record in the IPL. Gavaskar said that it was understandable that people wanted a big celebration in Bengaluru.
Condolences to the Victims
Gavaskar was sad about the stampede. He referred to it as a tragic incident. He conveyed his condolences to the families of those who were killed in the accident.
