Trademark Application Approved by Registry
Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has formally applied to trademark the sobriquet 'Captain Cool'. Famous for remaining cool under pressure, Dhoni acquired this sobriquet from fans and media alike during these years. Dhoni guided India to three big ICC titles and is now best known for his calm handling.
As per the portal of the Trademark Registry, Dhoni's application has already been accepted. The entry was published in the official June 16, 2025 Trademark Journal. If nothing comes in objection within 120 days, the trademark will be issued.
Trademark Use and Legal Process
The trademark will be used for sports training, coaching services, and training centers. Dhoni's legal advisors clarified that the nickname would be utilized only for sporting and entertainment-related purposes.
Dhoni’s lawyer, Mansi Agarwal, confirmed the development. She said the process faced several challenges. Initially, the Trademark Registry raised an objection under Section 11(1) of the Trademark Act, citing the possibility of public confusion due to similar terms already registered.
But Agarwal contended that Dhoni has a well-established public association with the nickname. She said that he has been called 'Captain Cool' by fans and media for many years. The team made it clear that the designation would hold only in the sports and entertainment sector, minimizing any likelihood of confusion.
Registry's Final Decision
After reviewing the case, the Trademark Registry accepted the lawyer’s reasoning. The registry acknowledged that the term has become closely linked with Dhoni’s public identity and brand. It concluded that the nickname plays an important role in Dhoni’s business image.
