IPL Franchises Invest In ‘The Hundred’: Michael Vaughan Supports Move

Indian Premier League Team Owners Acquire English Team Stakes

Some IPL franchise owners have invested in 'The Hundred', an English cricket league, recently. This includes the four IPL franchises—Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, and Lucknow Super Giants—buying stakes in four of the league's eight teams.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is reportedly set to complete the process of ownership by August 5. They will be raising an estimated £520 million, with some of it being allocated to county cricket clubs in the form of funding assistance.

Michael Vaughan Applauds the Decision

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan embraced the investment. He described the financial injection from The Hundred as one that could revolutionize the future of the 18 first-class county sides in England.

"If counties remain open and share ideas, they will become more powerful together," Vaughan declared. He added that this collective effort should desist from competition between Test-hosting counties.

He further said that the involvement of IPL will assist county cricket in becoming better by providing access to veteran coaches and international exposure. Vaughan went on to say,

"IPL is too strong to stop now. It will only keep growing."

County CEO Calls for Emphasis on Long-Term Revenue

Warwickshire County Cricket Club CEO Stuart Cain spoke about the financial aspect of this investment. He recognized that although large clubs such as Surrey, Lancashire, and Warwickshire realized almost 44% of overall county turnover in 2023, smaller clubs continue to depend on ECB finance.

Cain suggested all counties prepare for self-financing streams.

"This investment can underpin both T20 and Red-ball cricket," he added.

He emphasized the need to invest money into building infrastructure, fans, and future revenue streams.

"We need to learn from the way IPL functions," he added.
