India wins Women's ODI World Cup after 47 years
The Indian women's cricket team defeated the South Africans in the finals of the Women's ODI World Cup to become the new world champion, ending the wait for 47 long years. Earlier, led by Mithali Raj, India had entered the final on two occasions but never won. This time, under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur, Team India played with utmost focus and precision and didn't commit any major error while winning the championship. Their victory is being highly praised by fans, officials, and sports personalities throughout the country.
BCCI Announces ₹51 Crore Reward
- The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced a cash prize amounting to ₹51 crore for the winning team. Announcing it, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said the amount will be distributed among players, coaches, and support staff.
- Apart from that, he also said that ever since Jay Shah took over as the Secretary of the BCCI in 2019, women's cricket has been given utmost importance. Shah, who is also the ICC Chairman, ensured better prize money and recognition for the same. This move, according to Saikia, would motivate women to come into the sport.
- He added, "Cricket has always been a favourite sport in India since the men's team won the World Cup in 1983 under Kapil Dev. Now, the women's team has also achieved something historic. This victory will motivate the future generation to take up cricket seriously.
Jaisha Hails Team India's Efforts
- ICC Chairman Jay Shah, Jaisha in the statement, congratulated the Indian women's team for the maiden victory in the World Cup. He pointed out that it was the women's courage, determination, and skill that have inspired the nation.
- Shah also acknowledged various policy changes within BCCI, including the change in pay for women cricketers, significant increases in funding, and an overhaul of coaching programs. He said it's these reforms that have contributed greatly to the team's success.
