Indian Womens Cricket Team Victory Rally Update: BCCI Statement

Victory Celebration Delayed Due to ICC Meetings

  • The Indian women's cricket team created history as they won the ICC Women's ODI World Cup for the first time. They defeated South Africa by 52 runs in the final to become the world champion. However, victory rallies will not be held for now, confirmed the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
  • BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia said the decision on the celebration would be taken only after key officials return from the ICC meetings scheduled in Dubai from November 4 to 7.
  • "As of now, there is no plan for a victory rally. I am going to Dubai to attend the ICC meetings and many officials will also go there. We will decide after returning," Saikia said while talking to media at Mumbai airport.

Asia Cup Trophy Issue to Be Discussed

  • Saikia further said that the issue of the Asia Cup trophy, which has not yet been sorted out, would also be discussed during the ICC meetings.
  • "We will raise the matter of the Asia Cup trophy with ICC. We strive to bring the trophy back in an honourable manner," he said.

Background: Dispute Over Trophy Handover

  • The tensions between the two countries have escalated after an act of terrorism in Pahalgam by Pakistan-backed groups. Because of this situation, Indian players refrained from shaking hands with Pakistani cricketers during the Asia Cup.
  • India won the Asia Cup final against Pakistan. But the players refused to accept the trophy from Asian Cricket Council Chief Naqvi of Pakistan. Instead, Naqvi took the trophy and medals back with him.

The problem has persisted since then. It is reported that the BCCI has written to the ACC over the issue already, but that is yet to be resolved.
