Ongoing ICC Meetings
- The International Cricket Council is currently holding its annual four-day General Meetings that run until Friday. One of the big talking points is whether India will be officially awarded the Asia Cup trophy.
- The cricket officials said that another main issue is the status of President of the PCB, Mohsin Naqvi, who is also the Chairman of the ACC. As per reports, Naqvi took the Asia Cup trophy with him when the event was concluded. India, winners of the championship, reportedly did not accept the trophy from Naqvi. Despite that, he kept the trophy in his office and insisted on presenting it himself.
- The Board of Control for Cricket in India, in response, has filed a complaint with the ICC and is now pushing for action during the ongoing meetings.
Charges Against Naqvi by BCCI
According to sources, BCCI has drafted a comprehensive list of charges against Mohsin Naqvi. The prime charge he faces is the violation of ICC's administrative rules by holding the dual chairman positions of PCB and ACC while being a government minister in Pakistan.
Reports say that Afghanistan too has allied itself with India over this issue. Because of the recent military skirmishes between Pakistan and Afghanistan, relations between them are at a sour state. Hence, Afghanistan has asked Naqvi to quit one of his posts.
Uncertainty Over Naqvi's Attendance
- He has not attended the meetings of the ICC so far, reportedly because India's Jay Shah is the chairman of the ICC. It is not known whether he will be joining the final sessions.
- According to reports, Naqvi intends to answer the BCCI's allegations through Pakistan's representatives. The PCB Chief Operating Officer Sumair Syed is expected to represent Pakistan at this meeting.
- International media have reported, however, that he is likely to appear in person at the ICC meeting scheduled for November 7 to present his explanation.
