Washington Sundar Ready To Bat At Any Position For Team India

The flexible role within the batting order

Washington Sundar further mentioned that he is ready to bat at any position the team wants. Recently, in the Kolkata Test, he batted at No. 3, and then, in the Guwahati Test, he came to bat at No. 8. During this time, he scored 29 off 82 balls in the first innings, while in the second innings, he played 31 balls off 92. In the second innings, he was the top-scorer for India in Kolkata, where he alone remained at the crease amidst the struggling lineup.

Loss of Position During the Guwahati Test

For the Guwahati Test, Sai Sudarshan came into the playing XI. The move pushed Sundar down from No. 3 to No. 8. He scored 48 runs off 92 balls in the first innings and narrowly missed half a century. That made him India's second-best scorer after Yashasvi Jaiswal. He also played a 72-run partnership off 208 balls for the eighth wicket with Kuldeep Yadav to stabilise the innings.

Adapting to Team Requirements Under a New Coaching Setup

Since Gautam Gambhir took over as the head coach, Sundar has batted at the following seven different positions during his last seven Test innings: No. 5, 8, 9, 7, 3, 3 and 8. About this flexibility, he says he enjoys adapting to different roles. Further, he adds that he wants to be able to contribute both with bat and ball, whenever the team wants him.

Current Status of Match

India are lagging behind in the ongoing Guwahati Test. In this game, South Africa set up 489 runs in the first innings, while India had managed only 201 runs in reply.
