Our Cricketers Rarely Play In Foreign Leagues: IPL Chairman

No other franchise-based cricket league in the world enjoys this amount of fame and viewership as the IPL. However, the Indian cricketers are not allowed to participate in any of the foreign leagues unless they declare their retirement from international cricket. From leading players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to promising ones like Shubman Gill, the choice of playing franchise cricket remains only within the IPL.

IPL Chairman Arun Singh Dhumal explained that Indian players are unlikely to get opportunities in foreign leagues soon. He termed workload management as the main reason.

"Indian cricketers are already facing a tight schedule. The BCCI rule ensures the players of Team India participate in the domestic tournaments. They already play the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. There is lot of cricket played in India and the people love it too. Keeping this in mind, I don't think they will be able to play in foreign leagues anytime sooner, says Dhumal.

He added, "Currently, top players cannot play abroad. Many of them play in all three formats. Their schedule is very tight. We provide rest to some bowlers after two Test matches and also give breaks from T20s and ODIs. If they go abroad to play during these periods, it could affect the national team."
