India Seeks Immediate Information About Medicine Exports To Pakistan

Tensions Escalate After Pahalgam Terror Attack

The terror strike in Pahalgam has further strained the already strained relations between India and Pakistan. India, in retaliation, is making strategic moves to pressurize Pakistan, which is already embroiled in serious economic problems.

Compilation of Pharma Export Data in Progress

The Department of Pharmaceuticals has begun to collect detailed information about medicines and pharmaceutical products exported to Pakistan. The Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil) has been asked to supply this information on an urgent basis.

"We have asked for pharma export data to Pakistan. Pharmexcil is preparing the data and will supply it soon," stated a senior government official to the national media.

Based on official reports, Pakistan is the 38th of 219 countries that import Indian pharmaceuticals.

Trade Disruption's Effect on Pakistan

The officials pointed out that Dubai is an important middleman in the trade of Pakistan. Numerous medicines being exported to the UAE from India are being re-exported to Pakistan. Interfering in these supply lines should severely affect Pakistan's access to essential medicines.

This is not the first time India-Pakistan relations have come under great strain. Such tensions were witnessed after the Balakot air strikes and the abrogation of Article 370.

Diplomatic Measures After the Attack

A terrorist attack on April 22 in Pahalgam killed 26 tourists. This attack has added considerable diplomatic tension. In retaliation, India has:

  • Suspended the implementation of the Indus Waters Treaty.
  • Ordered Pakistani nationals to depart India forthwith.

Pakistan responded by:

  • Announcing the suspension of the Shimla Agreement and other bilateral treaties.
  • Limiting Indian planes from flying through its airspace.

India has gone ahead with its strategic choices notwithstanding protests from Pakistan.
