Trump Offers Zero Tariffs If Canada Joins The United States

Canada Election Results Released

The results of Canada's general election are coming out. The Liberal Party has won 59 seats and is ahead in 101 more. In response to these results, U.S. President Donald Trump congratulated the Canadians. But he also created a stir while announcing this.

Trump Offers Canada a Position as the 51st State

Trump announced that if Canada were to agree to become the 51st state of America, he would eliminate all tariffs that had been imposed earlier. He assured free movement across the border without restrictions. Trump also assured that trade and business activities would be untainted by disadvantages.

Trump Highlights Benefits for Canada

The U.S. President reiterated that Canada would receive numerous advantages if it embraced his offer. He indicated that Canada would be a beloved state and that the historic border would cease to exist. Trump, however, threatened that refusal would mean an end to the yearly subsidies of hundreds of billions of dollars that are given to Canada.

Canadian Leaders React to Trump's Comments

Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre issued a strong critique of Trump's remarks. Poilievre claimed that the U.S. President must never interfere with the elections in Canada and should abide by their sovereignty. Poilievre affirmatively stated that Canada will not become an accessory to the United States and remain an independent sovereign country.

Once in office, Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian imports. He defended this action by stating that he was concerned about illegal immigration and drug smuggling. Trump had previously threatened that if these issues were not addressed, Canada might be compelled to think about becoming the 51st state.

Canada's Retaliatory Actions

Canada retaliated against the American imports by slapping heavy tariffs. Indeed, the Prime Minister has said the sanctions will not be lifted until Trump recants the tariffs. Carney accused the United States administration of attempting to annex Canadian water, land, and resources, putting an end to Canada's existence. He threatened to resist such attempts.
