India Hits All-Time High In Monthly GST Collections With ₹2.37 Lakh Crore In April

India has set a record with the collection of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) worth ₹2.37 lakh crore in the period of April 2025. It is the new record as the earlier one was of ₹2.10 lakh crore for April 2024. Such a sharp surge is an indicator of a sound bounce back of economic activity along with enhanced tax compliance. GST system which has begun its implementation from July 2017 stands robust as the collections reflect improved consistency.

GST Collections Register 12.6% Year on Year Growth

The Ministry of Finance reported the collection of GST in April 2025 at ₹2.37 lakh crore, which is an increase of 12.6% over the collection of April 2024 when it was ₹2.10 lakh crore. The increase is a pointer to consistent economic recovery and improving tax administration. March 2025 collection remained at ₹1.96 lakh crore, recording healthy month-on-month growth.

Domestic transactions added ₹1.90 lakh crore to April collections, rising 10.7% over corresponding period last year. Collectively, receipts on imported goods were ₹46,913 crore, rising 20.8% year on year. With ₹27,341 crore worth of refund payments, the net GST revenue in April 2025 was ₹2.09 lakh crore, an increase of 9.1% from a year earlier.

Monitoring GST Trends Since Launch

Since the introduction of GST on July 1, 2017, trends in revenue have made fundamental changes. In its first month, GST collection was at ₹92,000 crore. But early launch time challenges resulted in flattened collections for the first few months. A milestone was reached in April 2018 when collection crossed ₹1 lakh crore for the first time.

Following years experienced fluctuations for reasons such as the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected tax collections heavily. April 2022 experienced a revival with collection of ₹1.67 lakh crore. Monthly collection has been more than ₹1.50 lakh crore ever since. ₹2 lakh crore was crossed for the first time in April 2024 and again in April 2025, creating a new record.
