New Defense Initiative to Shield America from Missile Threats
President Trump has decided that the US will make a new missile defense system which he has called the "Golden Dome". The idea is that it will be a cover for the country from missile attacks and the defense is going to be ready within three years. The first $25 billion will go from the government. The whole system is expected to cost $175 billion in the end.
Trump's remarks revealed that the shield was in fact the US president's pre-election commitment. "I presented a top-notch missile defense system. We are now in the process of building it," he said. When completed, the system will be able to combat missile threats even from the outer space. He stressed that the technology is a major breakthrough not only in national security's realm but also globally.
Leadership and Support from Allies
The US Space Force will be in charge of the project under General Michael Guttlin. Also, Trump announced that Canada has shown interest in joining the project. Despite Trump's estimate of $175 billion as the overall cost, the Congressional Budget Office suggests the actual cost could be as much as $542 billion.
Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth has stopped the rumors and has confirmed that the work done is fast. They hope that the country will be strong against any such missile threats as cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, hypersonic missiles, drones, and nuclear attacks.
International Reactions: Russia and China Oppose the Plan
Some countries are not supporting the plan. Russia and China have expressed strong opposition. They warned that the Golden Dome could turn space into a military zone. Both nations said the project might increase global instability.
The U.S. has previously supported Israel in building the Iron Dome, which blocks incoming missiles. The Iron Dome became operational in 2011. Now, the U.S. is planning to build a similar, but more advanced system for its own defense.
