US Government Statement on Ceasefire
The United States has asserted that India and Pakistan consented to a ceasefire only after former President Donald Trump intervened as a mediator. The US states that he also assured both nations relief relating to trade. This assertion was made in a recent hearing in a New York court. The US feels that this intervention averted a bigger war.
Court Hearing Details
The US brought this matter in the context of a case for grievances alleging that President Trump had exceeded his lawful authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Petitioners claimed that he abused these powers for purposes of influencing trade policy on the basis of personal opinions. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick came to the defense of the moves, claiming Trump employed IEEPA authorities for safeguarding both American national security and economic interests.
India's Response
India rebutted the US allegations and firmly rejected any outside intervention in deciding the ceasefire. Ministry of External Affairs said that India and Pakistan signed the agreement on their own. Officials explained that from May 7 (Operation Sindoor) to May 10 (ceasefire date), only military issues were discussed between India and the US. Tariff relief or issues of trade did not come up during that time.
