Trump Bids Emotional Farewell To Elon Musk, DOGE Chief

Musk Drops Position as Advisor to President Trump

Elon Musk officially resigned from being an advisor to President Donald Trump. He was the leader of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) aimed at eliminating wasteful government expenditures. Musk dropped by the President's office on May 30, which was his last day in the position.

On the occasion, President Trump appreciated Musk's services. As a gesture of gratitude, a gold-colored key ring was presented to Musk. Trump mentioned that the gift is normally reserved for only special people. He mentioned that it is being done on behalf of the country. In a press conference, Trump appreciated Musk's commitment and described him as a prominent businessman and inventor. He also appreciated the efforts of Musk in promoting national progress.

Musk Promises Continued Support

During the farewell, Musk shared his future intentions. He said he would continue to visit the presidential office when needed. Musk expressed his willingness to assist President Trump again if required. Although his formal advisory role has ended, he said he will remain a friend and informal advisor. He emphasized that while the DOGE term is over, the project itself is still active. Musk explained that he will now focus more on his business ventures and that the work done through DOGE aims to prevent trillions in wasteful spending.

Background on Musk’s Appointment

Once Trump started his second term, Elon Musk was recruited into the government as an advisor. He was tasked with heading DOGE, a ministry charged with reducing wasteful government spending. Musk presented sweeping reforms, such as reducing some of the federal bureaucracy. These were roundly criticized, with most attacking him for overreaching.

Reasons Behind Resignation

There are reports that Musk resigned as a protest against Trump's new "One Big Beautiful Bill Act." Musk had publicly dissented against the bill, stating that it would increase government expenditures and reverse DOGE's gains. Furthermore, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Musk was also against a proposed deal between OpenAI and the United Arab Emirates. Musk is said to have asked Trump to veto the deal, but the plea was rejected.

Also, under U.S. law, such advisory roles are limited to 130 consecutive days. Musk’s term officially ended on May 30 in line with this regulation.
