TCS New Bench Policy: Employees Allowed Only 35 Days On Bench

TCS introduces new bench time limit

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India's top IT company, has launched a new bench policy from June 12. According to this regulation, workers are required to report at least 225 billable days a year. The bench duration—the period when staff members do not work on client assignments—is restricted to 35 days.

What Are 'Built Business Days'?

In IT firms such as TCS, built days are days utilized working on projects assigned by the client. TCS has set this requirement at 225 days a year. This is to ensure the employee is gainfully occupied and not sitting idle.

Effect of Increased Bench Time

If the employee is on the bench for over 35 days, his or her salary, career growth, and even employment can be impacted, as per TCS's internal regulation.

Role of Resource Management Group (RMG)

The Resource Management Group (RMG) assists employees in finding appropriate projects. Employees need to schedule regularly with their unit or regional RMG if they are still not assigned. The global head of policy, Chandrasekaran Ramkumar, is in charge of this process.

Employee Obligations While on Bench

Bench employees have to:

  • Visit RMG regularly to obtain project assignments.
  • Utilize platforms such as iAvolve, Fresco Play, VLS, and LinkedIn to enhance skills.
  • Participate in the training sessions planned by the RMG.
  • Office work during bench period—no remote work is permitted.

Consequences of Non-Compliance of Policy

If an employee is not allocated to a project for quite a while, TCS can think of disciplinary measures. The company reiterates that being proactive in building skills and communication with RMG is the key.
