Starlink Launch Confirmed in Sri Lanka
Starlink officially began providing satellite internet in Sri Lanka today via X (formerly Twitter). This follows clearing by Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe in early June. Prior to the last verdict, a two-week public opinion poll was run and reviewed.
Enhanced Internet Connectivity Anticipated Countrywide
Launch of Starlink is likely to enhance connectivity with the internet in the country. Improved internet connectivity is also necessary for national security forces to track and monitor illegal activities more effectively.
Pricing Information for Starlink Services
The Sunday Times reports that the initial price of Starlink equipment in Sri Lanka is LKR 118,000. The monthly fee for unlimited data is LKR 15,000.
Starlink Also Approved in India
Starlink services have also gained an approval in India. The Department of Telecommunications has granted the required operating licence. Starlink is the third organisation to get approved, following Eutelsat OneWeb and Reliance Jio.
How Starlink's Technology Works
Starlink employs Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites to provide internet service. They are at an altitude of 550 km. This reduced orbit aids in minimizing latency, providing quicker and better internet compared to geostationary satellites.
Starlink Compares Well to Rural and Mountainous Areas
Due to its technology, Starlink is well-suited to provide internet in distant and inaccessible areas, such as mountainous regions. It is already up and running in over 100 nations.
