Jio Launches Cloud Virtual Desktop for TV
Jio Platforms, Reliance Industries' digital arm, has launched a new cloud service called JioPC. This function converts a television into a virtual computer via a Jio set-top box. The facility is offered free for Jio broadband subscribers, and an invitation-only trial is also operational. Users who are interested in the device alone can buy it for Rs. 5,499.
How to Set Up and Use JioPC
To use JioPC, users require three elements:
- A Jio set-top box
- A keyboard
- A mouse
After connecting the set-top box to the TV, users need to launch the JioPC app. Once the keyboard and mouse are plugged in, they establish a JioPC account. By clicking on Launch Now, the virtual desktop is activated. It supports activities such as browsing, studying, and taking online classes. Camera and printer support is yet to be integrated.
Software and Cloud Benefits
The official JioPC website reports that the machine comes equipped with LibreOffice, an open-source office suite. Microsoft Office applications are accessed using a web browser by the user. The platform accommodates educational tools, browsing, and application usage. As it's being managed on the cloud, there is no need for users to install updates. A stable internet connection is sufficient for proper functionality.
Jio's Vision for Cloud-Based Computing
Earlier this March, Jio Infocomm Chairman Akash Ambani had made the announcement to launch a cloud PC. Jio has now fulfilled that promise by introducing Jio CloudPC. Details are on Jio's official website.
