Sentence Declared for Kannada Actress Ranya Rao
Kannada actress Ranya Rao has been handed a one-year jail term. The order comes in the wake of her being involved in a gold smuggling case. The Foreign Exchange Conservation and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Board (CAFIFOSA) issued the order.
Two Others Also Sentenced
CAFIFOSA established that Tarun Kondaru Raju and Sahil Jain, also parties to the same case, were given the same one-year prison sentence. The board stated that no bail is permitted during the sentence. This is attributed to the substantial evidence obtained from the investigation. All three have to remain in prison for the entire year.
Regular Case Hearings Every Three Months
The board stated that hearings will be held every three months. This will be done for one year. The authorities will observe the case and continue to review it whenever necessary.
Ranya Rao Caught at Bengaluru Airport
Ranya Rao was apprehended at Bengaluru International Airport in the first week of March. She was smuggling gold illegally from Dubai. 14.3 kg of gold was seized from her by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). She was arrested on the spot.
ED Seizes Assets Worth ₹34.12 Crore
During the investigation, the home of Enforcement Directorate (ED) was searched. They seized property worth ₹34.12 crore. The investigation also revealed that Tarun Kondaru Raju and Sahil Jain assisted in the gold smuggling business. On the basis of this, officials arrested them as well.
