India Vs Pakistan Match In WCL Sparks Political Criticism

Priyanka Chaturvedi Questions BCCI's Decision

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has flayed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for letting India compete against Pakistan in the World Championship of Legends (WCL). She noted that the Indian government had previously announced that there would be no sports or bilateral relations with Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir.

She questioned how such a match could be allowed while the attackers from the Pahalgam incident remain unpunished. Chaturvedi also expressed concern over the BCCI’s priorities, highlighting that thinking about revenue while victims' families mourn raises ethical questions.

Public Sentiment After the Pahalgam Attack

The Pahalgam attack that left 26 tourists dead triggered a powerful response in India. In the aftermath of the attack, the Indian government suspended the Indus Waters Treaty and cut bilateral interactions with Pakistan, blaming the nation for sponsoring terrorism.

There is heated debate on whether these political conflicts must affect sports. India's future involvement in tournaments such as the Asia Cup 2025 is questionable.

BCCI Proceeds with WCL Match

In spite of the controversy, India Champions and Pakistan Champions are supposed to play in Birmingham in the WCL. The team will be captained by former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh. Other players from India are:

  • Shikhar Dhawan
  • Suresh Raina
  • Ambati Rayudu
  • Gurkeerat Singh
  • Yusuf Pathan
  • Stuart Binny
  • Irfan Pathan
  • Robin Uthappa
  • Harbhajan Singh
  • Piyush Chawla
  • Vinay Kumar
  • Varun Aaron
  • Abhimanyu Mithun
  • Siddharth Kaul

Sports vs. Diplomacy: Ongoing Debate

India and Pakistan have not held any bilateral cricket series over the past years. They only meet in ICC tournaments. The next WCL match, however, introduces a new dimension to the current debate on whether sports can or should not be kept apart from diplomatic rivalries.
