Trump's Promise and the Continued Ukraine Conflict
Older President Donald Trump vowed to bring an end to the war in Ukraine, but the war rages on. As a response, the United States intensified pressure on Russia. An example of this is a public debate between Trump and Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev. Their virtual fight heated up when Medvedev reminded Trump about the "Deadhand" nuclear weapons system. Soon after, the U.S. confirmed the relocation of two nuclear submarines closer to Russia.
Trump's Remark on Submarine Preparedness
Last week, Trump said the submarines are "in position and ready." The Pentagon and American Navy refused to comment on the situation, upholding operational secrecy.
Earthquake Effect on Russian Naval Base
An earthquake measuring 8.8 hit eastern Russia on July 30. Western news outlets report that the Rybachy naval base, which is in the area, was badly damaged. It shelters submarines belonging to the Russian Pacific Fleet. Satellite imagery from Umbra indicates that some of the submarines there were moved. The Borei-class and Soviet-era Delta submarines are reported to be based there. This comes at a time when American submarines are being actively deployed due to Russia's naval deployments.
India's Allegations of Oil Purchases
Strong words were made against India by Stephen Miller, who was Trump's Deputy Chief of Staff. He alleged that India is helping Russia's war efforts in Ukraine indirectly through its purchases of oil from Moscow. Miller said that Trump wants India to cut or halt these purchases of oil. He further added that India and China are importing huge amounts of Russian oil. Despite the criticism, Miller noted that Trump maintains a positive relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
