S Jaishankar Responds To Trump's Tariff Threats With Call For Equality

India Stresses Fair Global Practices Amid Tariff Warnings

Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has indirectly reacted to tariff threats by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump denounced India for purchasing oil from Russia and threatened to raise tariffs on Indian imports.

Jaishankar Calls for Non-Dominance in Global Relations

In a function in New Delhi, Jaishankar stressed the importance of equity in international policies. According to him, the world is passing through uncertain and intricate times. In those times, he added, globalization has to be transparent and provide equal representation to all nations.

He also stated that no single nation must attempt to dominate others. Traditions, in his opinion, are important and are crucial to gaining the respect of the world. He further stated that nations like India must have faith in their own way and cultural heritage while creating the future.

Trump's Tariff Threats and India's Stand

Donald Trump had previously imposed a 25% tariff on Indian imports. He recently criticized India again and also threatened to raise tariffs again. Trump criticized India for not paying attention to the human toll of the war in Ukraine while still engaging in oil trade with Russia.

India has turned down the criticism. It explained that it is purchasing Russian oil for its domestic economic purposes to fulfill its energy requirements in times of an international crisis. The Indian government asserted that this choice is made out of its domestic economic interests and not based on outside pressure.
