Trump Revises Statement On Tariffs Over Russian Oil Trade

Trump's Previous Threat on Tariffs

United States President Donald Trump recently condemned nations still importing oil from Russia. He noted that hefty tariffs may be levied. Trump threatened that certain nations, such as India, may have to pay 100% tariffs if they persist in oil trade with Moscow.

Shift in Trump's Stand

Subsequently, Trump made clear that he had not put any percentage on the intended tariffs. In a media briefing at the White House, he stated, "I have not mentioned percentages. We are still working on it. We may make a decision soon. A meeting with Russia is planned for tomorrow (Wednesday, U.S. time). We will consider it then."

Questions on U.S.-Russia Trade

Reporters also questioned Trump regarding U.S. imports from Russia. In particular, they enquired if the U.S. is importing uranium and fertilizers from Moscow. Trump replied, "I'm not aware of that. I need more information. I'll respond once I know more."

Concerns Over India-Russia Trade

Trump complained about India's trade with Russia. He has already slapped a 25% duty on Indian products and threatened to raise it further. He said, "Buying oil from Russia supports their war effort. I am not okay with that."

India's Response

India denied the accusations and pointed out that the U.S. also trades with Russia. Indian officials claimed the U.S. imports chemicals and fertilizers from Moscow. They argued that singling out India is unfair.
