Nikki Haley Urges Balanced Approach to Trade and Alliances
Indian-American Republican leader Nikki Haley has said that America should not damage its relationship with India, which is one of its most important allies. Her comments follow when former President Donald Trump opined that India was an unreliable ally and threatened a sharply higher tariff on Indian imports.
Unequal Treatment of China and India Worries
Haley, in an X (formerly Twitter) post, condemned the policy granting China permission to purchase oil from Russia without incurring the same tariff penalties. She noted that while India is cautioned about the trade implications, China keeps buying the most fuel from Russia. She indirectly faulted the move of granting a 90-day tariff exemption to China while being tougher on India.
Support for Good U.S.-India Relations
Haley underlined that the U.S. must not drive away a powerful ally such as India by giving such exemptions in trade to China. She pointed out how maintaining close relationships with India is crucial at this time of global politics.
Haley's Role and Recent Statements
Haley was a former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations under Trump's presidency and was a contender in the 2024 presidential election before supporting Trump. Her latest statement has been interpreted as an appeal for a more consistent and balanced foreign policy.
Trump's Recent Change in Tone Towards India
Trump, who also called India an ally in the past, has now said that India is not a good ally. Trump suggested a 25% tariff to countries that import energy from Russia, saying that such measures help Russia's war efforts indirectly. Trump threatened to raise tariffs dramatically.
Russia Defends India's Sovereignty
In response to Trump’s comments, Russia defended India's right to choose its own trade partners. Russia stated that sovereign countries must protect their national interests and make independent economic decisions.
