US Tariffs Spark Political Reactions in India
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has condemned Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the United States raised tariffs on Indian products. Kharge stated that the present government cannot blame the Congress party, which was in power for 70 years, for this outcome.
He remembered past American measures against India, such as the use of the Seventh Fleet during the 1971 conflict and sanctions following India's nuclear explosions. India was able to preserve its dignity but enhance ties with the US at that time, he mentioned. Kharge contended that the current administration has not been able to effectively deal with diplomacy.
Impact of New Tariffs on Indian Economy
The tariffs imposed by the previous US President Donald Trump have been raised from 25% to 50%. Implemented in full, they will cost the Indian economy approximately ₹3.75 lakh crore. This hike will greatly impact small-scale industries, agriculture, the pharmaceutical industry, and textiles, says Kharge.
PM Modi Responds to Tariff Concerns
Prime Minister Narendra Modi indirectly retaliated against the tariff increase. He mentioned that the Indian government will never compromise on farmers' interests, fishermen, and dairy workers. Modi informed that the interest of farmers is a matter of top priority and he will bear any expense to safeguard their interests.
