BJP Accuses Congress Of Voter List Irregularities Involving Sonia Gandhi

BJP's Charge

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) charged the Congress party with previous electoral irregularities. BJP leader Amit Malviya alleged that the name of former Congress president Sonia Gandhi was found in India's voters' list prior to her becoming an Indian citizen.

Sonia Gandhi was added to the voter roll three years prior to becoming a citizen in April 1983, Malviya said. She was then an Italian citizen. Her name was entered with members of the Gandhi family, such as Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi, and Maneka Gandhi, he said.

Malviya said her name was removed in 1982 after protests, but reinstated in January 1983, a few months before she officially became a citizen. He alleged that this action by the Congress government violated constitutional and democratic norms.

Congress’s Response

The Congress party has turned down BJP's assertions and blamed the BJP and also the Election Commission of what it termed as a "massive criminal fraud" during the ongoing elections. Party leaders pressed the BJP for answers on the allegations.

Union Minister's Statement

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju spoke to a different issue concerning Congress leaders. He spoke against them for leaking the personal information and photos of a woman named Minta Devi without her authorization.

Minta Devi, who protested in front of Parliament dressed in a T-shirt of herself, explained that her family was subjected to media invasion as a result of actions taken by the Congress party. Rijiju asked if Congress would apologize for sharing private information without consent.
