Putin Condemns U.S. Tariffs on India
American then-President Donald Trump had levied heavy tariffs on India for importing oil from Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke strongly against these developments. According to him, India should not be placed under any external pressure.
Statement in Sochi
Addressing the media in Sochi, Putin condemned Washington's attempts to limit energy business with Moscow. He threatened that they would rebound against the U.S. He said more tariffs on Russia's trade partners would drive up global energy prices. This, according to him, would force the U.S. Federal Reserve to raise interest rates, slowing down the American economy.
Future Visit to India
Putin said he would travel to India in December. He spoke about his good relations with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said Russian exports of crude oil would assist India to reduce losses from U.S. tariffs. He further said Russia would attempt to address trade disparities and improve co-operation with India in the field of technology, agriculture, and drugs. He also reaffirmed Russia's supply of uranium to the U.S. market.
Response to "Paper Tiger" Comment
Putin also reacted to Trump's statement that Russia is a "paper tiger" in the conflict with Ukraine. Putin asserted that Russia is not just waging war against Ukraine but is also waging war against the NATO alliance. He questioned why Russia should be labeled weak, asking what it means for NATO if Russia is but a "paper tiger."
