
Trump's Latest Remarks on India's Russian Crude Imports
US President Donald Trump has recently made remarks on India's oil trade with Russia. In reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trump has stated that India will not be buying massive amounts of oil from Russia. Trump previously stated that India ceased all such purchases altogether. Trump's latest remarks are a shift of tone.
Diwali Event at the White House
- There were Diwali festivities at the White House on Tuesday (local time). President Trump, accompanied by senior officials, was present on the occasion. In his address, Trump greeted Indian-Americans and wished them a happy Diwali. He also thanked Prime Minister Modi in a nice way and referred to him as a "great person" and a "great friend."
- Trump announced that he had spoken to Modi during the day. They spoke about a variety of issues, including trade relations and security in the region. He added that both presidents spoke of not engaging in any war with Pakistan through enhanced trade relations.
- Trump said he admires the Indian people and that the two nations are discussing great deals. Trump asserted that India would not be buying enormous quantities of oil from Russia, even though Trump had previously claimed that India already stopped buying them. This ratcheting up caused a commotion, as Trump's earlier statements were more categorical.
- According to Trump, both Modi and he want the Russia-Ukraine war to get over as soon as possible. However, the Indian government has so far not made any official statement regarding this alleged conversation.
Earlier Statements and India's Response
Trump has also made such claims in the past, that Modi had assured him about stopping oil imports from Russia. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs subsequently denied such claims. It stated that no such exchange of words ever took place between the two leaders. Still, Trump went on to state such words again at the recent function, albeit reiterating India's position on Russian oil imports.
