Putin Cancels Plutonium Deal, Renewing Nuclear Tensions With The U.S.

Russia Ends Nuclear Agreement with the United States

Russian President Vladimir Putin has formally terminated the Plutonium Management and Disposition Agreement with the United States. The agreement, originally signed in 2000 and amended in 2010, would have utilized 34 metric tons of plutonium held by both nations for civilian nuclear energy rather than military production. U.S. officials then estimated that the agreement would keep about 17,000 nuclear weapons from being produced.

Despite this, relations between the two countries deteriorated in 2016 under former U.S. President Barack Obama. Subsequently, Putin put an end to the agreement after these tensions. He has recently signed a law fully ending the agreement. This move, made in the middle of the current war with Ukraine, has created fresh alarm regarding nuclear security. Experts feel that Russia may resume or enhance its nuclear weapons program after this withdrawal.

Trump's Response to Russia's Missile Test

US ex-President Donald Trump responded sharply to the recent testing by Russia of the nuclear-powered Burevestnik cruise missile. Trump condemned Putin's move, adding that it adds to the instability in the world. Trump said that instead of conducting tests of long-range missiles, Russia should concentrate on putting an end to the war against Ukraine.

He also threatened that the United States maintains strong nuclear submarines off the Russian coast. "Don't play with us," Trump declared, adding that the U.S. is not looking for war but will defend itself if threatened.

Details About the Burevestnik Missile Test

Based on Russian authorities, Burevestnik cruise missile flew for nearly 15 hours and travelled 14,000 kilometers in its latest test. Russian Army Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov said the missile had the capability to hit any target with great accuracy at long ranges.

President Putin has ordered Russian commanders to construct the infrastructure necessary to deploy this missile system. The news has attracted worldwide attention, and experts are concerned that it may represent a new era of nuclear rivalry between Russia and the United States.
