India Extends Financial Support for Airport Development
The International Airport at Hanimaadhoo, which has been developed with Indian aid, is located in Maldives. The project was financed under a line of credit from the Indian government. The newly built airport was jointly inaugurated by the Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu and Indian Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu.
Inauguration Highlights and Leaders' Remarks
At the inaugural event, President Muizzu highlighted the airport as an essential access point for the Maldives to connect with the rest of the world. He termed it a symbol of the country's economic growth and asserted full confidence that it will accelerate not only economic but also social development.
Rammohan Naidu, representing the Government of India, attended the ceremony on Sunday night. The event coincided with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives.
Symbol of Strong Bilateral Relations
President Muizzu said that the airport represents the growth of friendship between the two countries. The Indian High Commission in the Maldives has shared on social media that the airport is a symbol of progress and prosperity and a testimony to India's commitment to the Neighborhood First policy and Ocean Vision.
India's continued cooperation with the Maldives
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to the Maldives as one of India's most trusted regional partners. He elaborated that the Maldives is an integral part of India's 'Neighbourhood First' policy. The Indian government has also made it clear that the country will provide continued financial support under its line of credit programs. There are also discussions over a possible free trade agreement between the two countries.
