Trump Supports Limited H-1B Visas, Says White House

White House Clarifies Trump's Position

The White House has clarified recent remarks by President Donald Trump on the H-1B visa program, saying he intends to safeguard American jobs but also remains committed to foreign investment in the United States. The comments he made fired up some criticism amongst his supporters, who have seen him shift tones from previously-held positions.

Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt said Tuesday that Trump is not seeking to replace American workers. She said his priority is U.S. manufacturing. She said he has imposed tariffs and negotiated trade agreements to help in that goal.

Foreign Workers for Specialized Manufacturing

Leavitt said Trump wants to allow limited foreign workers to help build specialized products, including batteries. She explained that foreign companies plan to invest large sums of money in U.S. manufacturing. She said Trump expects these companies to hire Americans after initial operations. She also repeated Trump's view that companies investing in the U.S. must give long-term job opportunities to American workers.

Trump's History With the H-1B Program

Trump, since the inception of his political career, has been advocating the "America First" policy. He has adopted inflexible stances regarding the H-1B visa, which allows foreign skilled workers to work in the United States. Recently, he assented to a large increase of $100,000 in the application fee, an action very alarming at a global level.

Trump defended the campaign by claiming foreign workers take jobs away from Americans. But his recent public remarks indicate a shift in tone. He said the U.S. still needs foreign workers to support companies investing billions of dollars in American industries. He also articulated that foreign workers should train American employees, then go back to their respective countries after accomplishing such a role.
