Visit Schedule and Context
The Kremlin said that Russian President Vladimir Putin will go to India on December 4–5. This is considered to be a very important trip given that the United States is increasing tariffs on India because it continues buying Russian oil. This adds political and economic importance to the trip.
Purpose of the Visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited Putin on a two-day visit. Both countries are working on several agreements. Russia is struggling with workforce shortages in the construction, textiles, engineering, and electronics sectors. Based on this, estimates indicate that more than 70,000 Indian workers and specialists could get job opportunities in Russia. An agreement on this workforce scheme is likely to be inked between both sides. Modi and Putin will also likely meet one-on-one.
Background of Recent India–Russia Engagements
This will be the first visit by Putin to India since 2021. Modi and Putin met twice in 2024. In July 2024, Modi paid a visit to Russia for a summit and received Russia’s highest civilian award, the “Order of St. Andrew the Apostle.” They again met in October 2024 in Kazan during the BRICS summit. The two leaders also spoke recently at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in China, where they discussed multiple issues.
