External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said that India has the right to build relations with any country in the world. He made it clear that no nation can veto India's diplomatic ties. Despite global uncertainties, he said India-Russia relations remain stable. Jaishankar made these remarks at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit on Saturday.
Addressing a question on the very recent visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India and its implications on the US-India trade agreement, Jaishankar responded that India has to collaborate with as many countries as possible. India has the independence to select its partners to advance its position in the world. He said though the world has undergone many changes in the last 70–80 years, yet the India-Russia relations would remain steady.
Diplomacy does not mean others have to be pleased, Jaishankar elaborated. He confirmed that trade talks with America are in process. A deal is likely to be inked shortly, and it would work out in India’s interest. His government is committed to the interests of workers, farmers, and middle-class people.
Challenges from Pakistan
- The question about Pakistan and its army chief Asim Munir cropped up during the summit. Jaishankar attacked the Pakistani army and said that India knows its true nature, which creates challenges for the country. He referred to Operation Sindoor in this context.
- Speaking about India-China relations, he highlighted their importance for the peace of the border. He said that the ties between India and China have improved recently.
- On the issue of Bangladeshi former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was sentenced in Bangladesh, Jaishankar said her presence in India is a personal one and made a comment on the extradition issue.
